            Kid Pan Alley (Ryan Benyo and Paul Reisler) invited children to write lyrics about their experiences during the past couple of years of social isolation, mask wearing, and vaccines, which were formed into these 11 memorable songs. Although no credits are given for the instrumentalists, the background music is an excellent accompaniment to these pop songs. The professional vocalists include Natalia Zukerman, Justin Roth, Darrell Scott, Kyle Davis, Randy Kaplan, Michael Lille, Robbie Schaefer, Vanessa Bryan, Jen Jacobsen, Billy Jonas, and Ben Mason. In “The Day the Stars Reached the Earth” listeners are encouraged to take care of the Earth. “Maybe Next Year” I’ll be able to see your smile or frown. “Dead on Arrival” is my social life until I get my vaccination. I’m “Staring Out My Window” and dreaming of when I played with others at school or home. When the pandemic is over, I’m going to “Tear My Mask” into little bitty pieces. “Small Things Make a Difference” in a world where love shines through the darkness. The “Bridge to Peace” is a foundation made of empathy, and a road paved with trust, support and understanding. A bird singing in the window helped the narrator realize there is “No Limit on Hope,” and the sunshine melted her tears. “I’ve Got a Whole Lot to Say” but no one to say it to. “I Think I Blinked” the day I learned the truth that I was adopted. Many are dreaming of the time when we can be “Together Again” and we don’t have to stay six feet away. These fine songs will reassure listeners that they are not alone in these trying times.

     Ben Tatar performs 10 original lively and energetic songs in New Orleans jazz, 70s Latin, funk, blues, pop, big band swing, and rhumba musical styles. These are very sophisticated tunes for children’s’ songs about food. Tatar and his guest vocalists, Anthony Bruno and Amyna Love, make some beautiful harmonies together. Guest bands LowDown Brass Band and Spare Parts join other musicians to make excellent performances on guitar, banjo, bass, tenor sax, clarinet, flute, trombone, trumpet, sousaphone, keys, Glockenspiel, drums, and percussion. The flavor of “Jambalaya” sends a melody to his soul, and he has music to play all night. “Peanut Butter” joins with jelly to make the taste complete. In answer to “Can You Write a Song About Broccoli,” he tried a million times to write broccoli rhymes, but the universe told him “no.” When “I Got the Greens,” I hit the salad bar and got spinach, lettuce, avocado, lima beans, and other greens. The musical style of “The Breakfast Song (Start It Right)” is reminiscent of the 70s band America. “Bake Me a Cake” or a pie, I shouldn’t need a reason why. I’m going “Back to the Buffet” to stack food a mile high: enchiladas, lima beans, pasta, oranges, greens, with syrup on veggies, and sprinkling bacon on fruit. Every morning, noon, and night, and every time I’m feeling uptight, I’m “Thinking of Pizza.” In “Oh Cookie,” Tatar sings the praises of chocolate chip cookies, avocados (holy guacamole), mashed potatoes, and enchiladas. “Sweet Nectarine” bring up close your fuzzy, peachy cheek. These fun sophisticated, bouncy songs will have the kids, parents, and grandparents all dancing, bobbing their heads, and tapping their feet.

Louis Epstein and Daniel Groll perform 8 original songs in musical styles influenced by hip hop, musical theater, indie rock, country, Tin Pan Alley, and folk. Clarinet, Glockenspiel, and drums are the only instruments credited, but the back-up musicians are excellent. “The New Invisible Band” introduces the band members and the roles they play. “I’m a Turkey” should have been the national bird but lost out to the eagle. “Mind Your Money” tells children how to grow their money by saving, investing, and budgeting (Louis & Dan seem to be in favor of evil socialism). “Happy Day” celebrates different holidays, including graduation, birthday, epiphany, Oktoberfest, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and many others. “Minneapolis the Musical City” extolls the talents of the Andrews Sisters, Judy Garland, Olive Fremstad (opera soprano), and several other musicians. “What Is a Family” includes a variety of family types, such as nuclear families, single parent families, and families with adoptees. In “Joy to the World,” an adventurous lady travels to many places, including Rome, Stockholm, Morocco, Tijuana, Puerto Rico, Italy, Beijing, Thailand, Peru, Paris, Toronto, Antigua, Norway, and others. “I’ll Take Myself to Bed” says the child wanting to give his parents a break. A humorous and enjoyable album.

Two-time Parents’ Choice Gold Award-winner, Keeth Monta Apgar (aka Harmonica Pocket), performs 11 original songs, 1 traditional song (“Twinkle, Twinkle”), and one cover, all with memorable and appealing melodies. On this 5^th album for children, his pleasant and smooth vocals blend in beautiful harmonies with his guest singers, Renee Stahl, his wife Nala Walla and son Montana Apgar. And occasionally, he lets rip an amazing falsetto. Apgar and his guest instrumentalists perform on guitars, ukulele, upright bass, bass, alto and baritone saxophones, trombone, harmonica, drums, percussion, Glockenspiel, and caxixi, in pop rock, country and folk musical styles. In “Sing Your Song,” you may not sound like everybody else, but you sound just like yourself, so open up your mouth and sing. “One Two I Love You” and three, four, couldn’t love you more. “Nest” celebrates a couple of birds building a nest (with bird chirps). In the “Sand Song” the narrator has sand in his hair, underwear, nose, between his toes, and he'd love to share if you’d care for some. In “Everything is Everywhere” the narrator lists a plethora of misplaced body parts, such as his nose is in his ear, etc. “Take a Little Finger” is a spoken poem in which listeners are asked to draw figures in the air and clap. In “Apples on the Sun,” one can taste apples that are growing on the sun and smell flowers that are blooming on the moon. In “Itchy 9,” the narrator suffers from itches all over his body (with sounds of scratching). “I Can Be the Princess” and you can be the violin; I can be the bird and you can be the flower, but I prefer to be me. The cover of “Stand by Me” features lots of harmonica. “Wee a Tilly” begins with the sounds of wind chimes, then avows apart or together, love you forever. The “Ukulele Lullaby” sings little ones to sleep. A lovely and beautifully executed album.

Award-winning Lindsay Munroe, mother of three children with autism, performs 14 lovely songs, three of which are covers of classic songs: “You Are My Sunshine,” “If I Knew You Were Coming,” and “Happy Trails.” Munroe wrote her songs to highlight encouragement, understanding, and respect for others, and to help neurodiverse children cope with every day events. Munroe is joined on several songs by Raffi, who also produced the album, and performed on guitar, ukulele, electric piano, violin, and other instruments. Munroe, with her clear and light soprano vocals, and Raffi harmonize beautifully together on several of these folk, jazz, pop, and other musical-style songs. In “Frogs and Birds,” including sound effects of chirping birds and croaking frogs, Munroe’s youngest daughter joins her in encouraging listeners to be aware of the feelings of others. “Faces Show Our Feelings” explains how facial expressions reveal interior emotions. “Feelings Like the Weather” reassures listeners that feelings may be only temporary and will pass away like bad weather. “Little Bird On My Window” has a motif from Brahms’ Lullaby as the chorus. “Flexible and Easygoing” encourages listeners to handle unexpected changes and disruptions to routines with calmness. “I See You” and hear you and respond to what you do and say. “The Ally Song” explains that an ally is a friend who is kind, who listens, and who respects others. “Conversations” are meant for two speaking and listening to each other. “Very Funny Things” realizes that children can take some idioms, such as “it’s a piece of cake,” “hold your horses,” and “raining cats and dogs” very literally. “Take a Breath,” (written by Raffi), tells listeners that they can calm down by breathing in and out. “Where There Is Love” we belong, in a family or in a community. This sweet and entertaining album, while excellent for all children, will be especially reassuring for neurodiverse children.

Raphael Groten, aka G’Raph, performs 13 original, quirky songs in folk, blues, soul, rock, funk, reggae/ska, country, and jazz musical styles. G’Raph performs with excellence on all of the instruments, including steel string guitar, cavaquinho, kalimba, bass, djembe, cowbell, shaker, cajon, bells, gong, triangle, and zinger toy. G’Raph uses different voices in some of the songs, such as a deep voice and a Donald Duck-style voice. He also utilizes different sound effects—wooden blocks, baby rattle, rain stick, and rattling dishes to name a few. An enthusiastic children’s chorus joins in on a few of the songs. “Hands in the Water” teaches youngsters how to thoroughly wash their hands. “I Can Eat a Rainbow” is about the variety of foods in many colors, such as red apples, yellow squash, and green cucumbers. “Happily Ever Now” explains that happiness can be found inside each person. “I Love You Baby” when the morning comes, and the sun is shining. “Don’t Pick Your Nose” tells listeners why this is a bad habit. “The Minor ABC’s” teaches listeners a new melody in a minor tune, then increases the tempo. G’Raph and the children’s chorus roar, “Monster Truck,” which is stuck in the muck. “I’m Not pErfect” lets listeners know that its okay to have imperfections and make mistakes.  “No! No!” is a silly song about dressing incorrectly and eating the wrong things for breakfast. In “Baby Blues” a crying baby complains about being hungry and having a dirty diaper. “The Only Me” with you is two, and with your puppet dog is three, etc. “Quiet Time” and “Owl’s Dream” (instrumental) are intended to help preschool children calm down after the previous lively songs. A fun and humorous album that will amuse listeners and keep them entertained.

Pachamama

     Originally from Peru and now living in NYC, Bromley performs 11 original songs about “Mother Earth” and caring for the environment. In this excellent album, she performs in diverse musical styles, including Andean huayno, bachata from the Dominican Republic, tanuillo from Cadiz, Tex-Mex quebradita, tango, country/folk, and a Peruvian hip hop fusion. Her guest musicians include Laurie Berkner, Justin Lansing (Okee Dokee Brothers), SaulPaul, and Wendy Sulca and Miss Laurita, both popular Peruvian singer/entertainers. Background instrumentalists make beautiful music on guitar, banjo, violin, jarana, flute, pan flutes, accordion, drums, and percussion. Half of the album is in English (with some Quechua), then all of the songs are repeated in Spanish (with some Quechua). “Pachamama” is the Quechua term for “Mother Earth.” A “Drop of Water” changes shape and ultimately flows into the sea. “The Ocean” is open and wide and contains many different creatures. The “Mango’s Tango” was a dance to decide which mango would be king of the mangos. Two siblings argue about the “Peas and Carrots” for dinner, over which is better. The “Totora Horse” is actually a boat for a fisherman. “Mother Nature” gives us presents every day. “Ñusta Tika” teaches us to respect all creatures. In “Condor, Puma, Snake,” each gives its perspective of the earth from its own viewpoint. “Let’s Move It,” is a lively, bouncy, participatory tune encouraging listeners to move their bodies. “Luz” is sung in both English and Spanish and asks listeners to let their lights shine. The Spanish titles are “La Pachamama,” “Gota de Agua,” “El Océano,” “El Tango del Mango,” “Arvejitas y Zanahorias,” “Caballito de Totora,” “La Naturaleza,” “Princesa Tika,” “Cóndor, Puma, Serpiente,” and “Muévete.” A great album for budding environmentalists.

The seven songs and interludes are first performed all together in English, then all the songs and interludes are repeated in Spanish. The only credited musicians perform with excellence on guitar, bass, saxophone, and drums. The musical style is an intriguing blend of pop rock, electronic dance music, and rap. Guest performers include rapper MC Magic, Izzi Def on saxophone, and Jace Blain, hip hop artist. Twinkle assures listeners that “It’s OK 2 Be Me.” Rise and shine because it’s a “Brand New Day.” Everyone stand up and “Let’s Keep it Movin’.” The “GateKeeper” keeps the key to one’s destiny. “Mask It Up” encourages listeners to wear masks and practice social distancing. “LOVE” is a magical word. “Together” we can build something that’s never been seen; includes rap interlude by MC Magic.  San Francisco singer Levy performs nine songs in folk and pop rock musical styles. With foot-tapping beats and sing-along tunes, she presents songs designed to help children define their values, to connect with others, and to use their creativity to connect with the natural world and make the world a better place. The album begins with “Roots & Branches” and rises up to the ending piece, “Leaves & Sky,” both of which are lovely folk instrumentals. “Turn Around” reminds listeners that they are changing and encourages them to be kind to their neighbors. “You Are Magic” because you can greet people with a smile, you can care for the earth, and you can make the world a better place. “Putting It Back Together” is a ballad about the narrator putting together a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle of the Earth on a snowy day. In “Draw,” a pencil and a crayon explain how they can create pictures. Written when she visited Big Sur, “Canopy” tells of a jungle or forest canopy, which protects the creatures underneath it. “The Gift” explains about different types of gifts, whether wrapped in paper or dropped at the gate. “Now Is the Moment” we’ve been waiting for because it’s our time (however, Levy does not explain what “we’ve” been waiting for). This lovely album will help listeners be mindful of other people and their environment.

            Jenn Cleary performs ten songs on her upbeat album in rock, rockabilly, blues, zydeco, and pop musical styles. Accompanied by excellent performances on guitar, banjo, mandolin, cello, upright bass, organ, piano, accordion, harmonica, drums, and tambourine, Cleary also includes an enthusiastic children’s chorus on several songs. We need wild places to make us happy and feel free, so we need to take care of “Our Wild Family.” From the viewpoint of a honeybee, “My Sisters and Me” explains how they live in community together to accomplish their tasks. “Scat’s the Word for That” is the scientists’ word for animal poo. “Clean Water” encourages listeners to gather up all sorts of trash off the streets, so it doesn’t flow into storm drains. In order to “Love Right Now,” listeners should care, share, and love one another. It is fun to pop “Bubbles” and watch the wind blow them away. On the “Backyard Farm” ducks, goats, dogs, bees, horses, and birds make all sorts of sounds. One child’s imaginary best friend is her “Dinosaur Friend.” Life would be better with “Less Gravity” because one could move more easily. “Families of All Kinds” might consist of mommy and daddy, auntie, grandparents, siblings, single parents, or foster parents. This thoughtful album will encourage listeners to make their world a better place.

I will be honest—I am not a fan of the hip hop musical style. Having grown up in the 1960s, I much prefer rock and roll. However, I realize that there are many much younger people who embrace this musical style, so this album is perfect for them. “Slow Clap” is anything but slow—these 11 songs are intended to be a hip hop dance party for kids, with the goal to encourage listeners to get off their backsides and get moving. Guest vocalists Murs, Sims, and Mega Ran join in on three songs. “Sticky Icky” is honey provided by bumblebees. “Ice Cold Lemonade” celebrates that cool, summery beverage. “Putt Putt Butt Butt” encourages listeners to move their “bottoms” when playing mini golf. In “Backyard Swimsuit,” children enjoy playing on the slip and slide plastic strip. A “Forklift” lifts pallets and puts them on trucks. A child goes “Sneakin’ Downstairs” when he needs a midnight drink of milk. Children play “Pranks a Lot” when they ring doorbells and run away. “Ink” tells listeners about ink-squirting squids. “Lazy Life” is when one commits oneself to a lifestyle of chilling. “200 Worms,” each one of which he has named, actually live in band member Bryan’s compost pile. Children must know the “Password” in order to gain access to the secret club. These energetic and bouncy songs will keep listeners hopping and bopping.

             On this fourth album, the Story Pirates continue to perform songs inspired by the ideas contributed by various children. The 12 songs are performed in various styles of rock and roll, pop, and jazz. The album features top Broadway talents including Lilli Cooper (“Tootsie”), Eddie Cooper “Little Shop of Horrors”), Alysha Deslorieux (“Hamilton”), and Stephanie Hsu (“Be More Chill”); and excellent backup musicians. A band of humans turn into strawberries whenever they play music. This band sounds suspiciously like the Beatles, including the style of rock and the voices. After the first song, “The Strawberry Band,” the band members discuss creating a concept album. In “The Case of the Musical Cinnamon Buns,” a monster from the sea sneezes magic onto a bunch of bakery buns; they come to life and hypnotize people, so two detectives decide they have to break the trance. If you need a change come on down to the “Fun Crazy Weird Hair Store,” where robots serve as the hairdressers. Two new students, the “Weird Sisters,” named Weird and Weirder put on clothes backwards and speak gibberish. In “Hedgie & the Cloud Kingdom,” a hedgehog floats up to a magical cloud kingdom in a magical balloon. In “Glowy & the Friend Adventure,” the whale Glowy lives in a whale-sized cave and realizes he needs a friend, so he decides to search the sea for one. Next the Strawberry Band members talk about creating a music video. They all speak in Beatles’ accents, with one female speaking in a Cockney accent. When some sinister Jaws-type music begins, their discussion segues into a song about being eaten by a shark. “The Fairy Without Wings” also has no confidence until she meets a water fairy and is invited to play. When Mom turns one daughter’s room into an exercise room, it is “The Night I Started Sharing a Room with My Sister,” who snores. On a “Blue Night”—a night with a blue moon—everyone celebrates with blue fireworks, confetti, balloons, and fondue. After a reprise of the first song, the album ends with “I Have a Cookie,” which is a cookie so huge that it took the narrator years to eat. The crazy creativeness of the songs will appeal to young listeners.

            Multi-award winning Andreas Zamenes (aka Andy Z) based his song on Mr. Rogers’ symbolizing “I love you” by the numbers 1 4 3. In the song he asks listeners to “show someone you care just because they’re there.” The background instrumentation has a rich and full sound with guitars, brass, drums, percussion, and more in a pop rock style. The music video (on YouTube) features Andy Z, sometimes with his guitar and sometimes using ASL, against an animated background of sun, moon, rainbows, flowers, musical instruments and more. For some reason, when I viewed the video, there were a couple of fuzzy, blurry spots, but most of it was quite clear. Young Maestros Vol. 1

            Classically trained violinist and pianist, rocker Tracy Bonham performs 11 original songs that teach musical concepts, in folk, jazz, rap, bluegrass, country, rock and other musical styles. Known for her chart-topping hit single “Mother, Mother” in the mid-90s, Bonham has most recently been teaching music concepts to preschool children. Her goal is to demonstrate that the process of making music can be more about fun than achievement. Bonham’s vocals adeptly handle the various musical styles, whether belting it out or quietly crooning. Bonham and the backup musicians perform with excellence on guitar, bass, violin, upright bass, piano, organ, clarinet, trombone, harmonica, drums, and percussion. In “Me Symphony,” the narrator has lost an entire orchestra of instruments in a variety of locations (tuba in Aruba, piano in Indiana, bongo in the Congo, etc.), but the show must go on. “Beats to a Measure” introduces children to rhythm in a measure of music. The black keys on the piano are likened to “All the Blackbirds” sitting in a tree. “Let’s Take the Subway” is a rollicking song using the names of the piano keys (C, B, G, etc.). The organization of a musical staff is detailed in “Lines and Spaces” and is compared to dancing and skipping. “I Like the Big Beats,” a parody of  “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot, celebrates various drums. Frightened by a variety of small animals, the reptile’s reaction is to “Shake Like a Rattlesnake.” “I Am a Movable Do” (of Do, re, mi) explains how the tonic note can begin on any pitch. Interesting harmonies and descants characterize the “Background Singers” when the lead singer is locked in a closet. “Feelin’ Pretty Major” musically explains the difference between major and minor keys. “A Song Without an Ending” is exactly that—is just stops in the middle of the song. This excellent album will be a boon to music teachers and parents, and fun for children learning to read music and play an instrument.    

Let's Put on a Show

            Award-winning Beth Jean is a songwriter, singer, tap dancer, and actress. She also contributes videos featured on the Emmy-winning PBS children’s show The Friday Zone. On this album she performs 10 original songs in show tune and pop rock musical styles. She envisions her album encouraging listeners to put on their own song and dance shows. Beth’s strong vocals are clear, and the background vocalists harmonize beautifully. Her backup musicians give excellent performances on guitar, bass, ukulele, keys, kazoo, drums, and percussion. “Let’s Put on a Show” invites listeners to put on a show, with tap dancing sound effects in the background. Never forget “You Are Magic!” Penguins sing “Waddlin’ We Go,” as they celebrate winter and sliding on snow and ice. In outer space, there is “No Gravity,” so we can float and fly free. You can do anything, so “Never Give Up.” A small rodent announces, “I Am a Hamster, Yes I Am Sir,” while nibbling and sipping on his water bottle. A man had “The Best Mustache in Michigan,” until one day there was a clipping mishap. In a high falsetto, the “Garden Gnome” describes searching for a new home. “Whoopsie Daisy,” what a doozy of a day, but it will be okay. The bird flies and sings, “Tweet a Little Tweet Tweet.” This fun album will entertain youngsters and encourage their imaginations.

            Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek and I’m With Her) performs with beautiful vocals on two original songs and 13 covers. The songs, some childhood favorites of hers, were chosen as soothing songs for a child’s nightly bedtime rituals. She is accompanied by an excellent group of musicians on guitar, bass, mandolin, violin, banjo, organ, piano, drums, and percussion. A musical interlude seamlessly segues one song into the next.             Best-selling kindie artist Laurie Berkner and her band perform 16 original and lively songs, mostly in pop rock musical style, but with a couple of Latin folk tunes and a cappella pieces included for good measure. Laurie’s soaring vocals are joined by a great children's chorus. Her background musicians perform with expertise on guitar, bass, violin, keyboards, organ, saxophones, trumpet, drums and percussion. Those impatiently waiting for others to get ready cry, “Let’s Go!” With a beautiful minor tune, Laurie explains that a lot of movement helps warm one up “When It’s Cold.” Halloween is the time to wonder “What Am I Gonna Be?” In “The Superhero Handwashing Song,” are instructions for effective hand washing. “I Saw a Butterfly,” so I purchased a hat, a jacket, pants, boots, and a scarf because I’m cold. I’m going to the lake and relax while “I’m On Vacation.” When “It’s Time to Eat,” we will have mac and cheese, vegetables, tacos, guacamole, apples, bananas, and strawberries. It is time to quieten down and “Listen to the Sounds,” such as breathing, heartbeat, children playing, traffic, etc. “It’s Hard to Be 3” because everyone says the opposite of what I say. “The Superhero Mask Song” tells children the reasons to wear a mask (although it is not quite true that germs, especially viruses, cannot get in or out of the paper or fabric masks most people wear). The other songs include “Jumping Jack,” “Take a Look at My Face (emotions),” “Tied My Shoes,” “One Step (with whistling),” “Happy New Year,” and “Beautiful Light.” Another terrific winning album from this seasoned performer.

That's My Piano, Sir!

 

That’s My Piano, Sir! Written by Ana Gerhard. Illustrated by Marie Lafrance. Book with CD (approx. 11 minutes). The Secret Mountain. 2020. 32 p. $16.95. Ages 7 – 9.

            Based on a real event in the life of 6-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, this story is told by Minim, a little orange-brown mouse wearing a charcoal overcoat, who loves cheese and music. The Mozart family arrives by ship to Vienna, and as they are disembarking, a couple of dock workers drop the crate/piano belonging to the Mozarts. Fortunately, it is not damaged, and when set up, Wolfgang takes out his violin, his sister Nannerl sits at the piano, and together they play Sonata for Piano and Violin KV.8, 1^st Movement. Everyone is cheered up, including Minim, whose image appears on most of the pages of the book. After actor/narrator Colm Feore (The Sum of All Fears, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, House of Cards) finishes his expressive reading, the chamber orchestra I Musici de Montréal performs Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (The Little Night Music) K.525, 4^th Movement. (I Musici de Montréal gives outstanding performances on both pieces of music). The back matter includes a few more details about Mozart. Inserted into the CD pocket is a flyer with a unique code for the digital download of the recordings. The first in a planned series, “Little Stories of Great Composers,” this book and CD are an excellent introduction to Mozart for young elementary students.

Sing Out!

    This picture book presents six traditional songs, three of which were published as individual picture books in 2018. I reviewed those three books in this blog on November 18, 2018: “Pop Goes the Weasel,” “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain,” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” The other three songs in this volume are “Little Bingo,” “This Old Man,” and “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”

The book is illustrated with brightly colored, stylized, and folksy illustrations. Each page contains a verse or a phrase from the song. The print is large, so that beginning readers would be able to read the words while listening to the music. On the CD, excellent background musicians perform on acoustic and electric guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin, lapsteel, kora, trombone, trumpet, accordion, and drums and percussion. The vocalists sing beautifully, clearly enunciating the words. Each of the songs is in a musical style suited to the song; i.e., “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain” is a toe-tapping bluegrass song featuring tight harmonies. “Little Bingo,” with dog howls, is a bouncy rock song with rhyming words: bing-o, ring-o, king-o, etc. “This Old Man,” in folk rock style, counts up to ten. “Pop Goes the Weasel,” is an upbeat, fast accordion folk piece. “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” is a fun country tune. “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” is a soft folk song accompanied by a quiet acoustic guitar, and light, clear female vocals.

Inserted into the CD pocket is a flyer with a unique code for the digital download of all recordings and a printable file of the illustrated lyrics. This book and the songs are great resources for passing along traditional songs to the next generation.

The brain child of Kristin Andreassen, songwriter, and Kari Groff, MD, child psychiatrist, and ten years in the making, this album’s goal is to help children connect to their emotions. An excellent line up of vocalists  perform the 11 original songs, some featuring lovely harmonies: The War & Treaty, Kristin Andreassen, Ed Helms, Kaia Kater, Oh Pep!, Gaby Moreno, Joey Ryan, Gabe Witcher, Zara Bode, Aaron Jonah Lewis, and Punch Brothers. In addition several children add their enthusiastic voices to the songs. The instrumentalists perform with excellence on various guitars, bass, mellotron, fiddle, banjo, violin, mandolin, organ, piano, drums and percussion. Bluegrass, pop, classic rock, and hard rock are only a few of the musical styles performed. Eight brief spoken skits introduce some of the songs. “The Song About Songs” explains that what makes a song a song is that you sing it and feel good. When children are having “The Mad Day,” they learn to calm down by taking deep breaths, letting them out slow, and letting the anger go. “Sad Is Not Forever” advises children to do something they think is fun to chase away the lonely blues. Make new friends while keeping the old “Forever Friends.” When you feel left out and excluded, “You Do You,” because you are cool anyway. “Vamos a Jugar” features a Spanish speaker and an English speaker sharing with each other the names of playground equipment in each language. Although life may seem like “Jumping Through Hoops,” you can always come out the other side. “Oops! I Made a Mistake” and can’t get it out of my brain. “The Moon & the Stars & Me” are watching over the world until the sun comes back. “Bully This” explains that bullies are not brave or cool, and that you are not their walking mat. The album ends with a reprise of “The Song About Songs.” The accompanying booklet includes activities that parents can do with their children that relate to each song, making this album an excellent resource for parents; while the appealing, catchy songs and skits will be enjoyed by both generations.

Award-winning Kelli Caldwell, (aka Kelli Welli), has been voted one of the top five performers in Portland, Oregon. Here she performs 15 energetic and bouncy original songs in country, bluegrass, pop, and classic rock musical styles. The instrumentalists give jaunty and expressive performances on guitars, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, bass, accordion; drums, kalimba,  percussion, and siren whistle. Kelli’s vocals are wonderfully capable of handling both the silly and the more thoughtful songs. Children and adults lend their enthusiastic voices in the background. In “The Hat Song,” putting on an appropriate hat can make one feel like a pirate, astronaut, cowpoke, or the birthday child. Those who are “The Smilers” shine brighter than the sun and make every day better. When a young girl gets her new wheelchair, “She’s So Bright” because the future’s in her eyes and brightness is her state of mind. One child is “Growing Like a Stringbean,” weed, and tree, and blooming like a flower. Is this nut a “Peanut Pinenut” or some other kind of nut? When Pistachio goes to a party and opens all the presents and eats all the cake, his companion has to say, “Let’s Go, Pistachio.” Nobody jumps like “Jumpin’ Beans” who can hop like a frog, bounce like a bunny, and pounce like a cat. “Tinkle, Tinkle, Toot” may encourage toddlers who are learning to use a potty. “I’m Proud of You”—proud of what you have done and proud of who you are. Because a child lost her tooth, “Tonight I’ll Be Brushing One Less Tooth.” A child waits for his turn patiently in “The Waiting Song.” A child loves “Kickin’ It with My Chicken” as her chicken rocks and bocks (with chicken sound effects). A child “Can’t Find My Appendix,” his tonsils, or his front teeth, although he has looked everywhere for them. A caterpillar muses that “I’ll Be a Butterfly” and fly so high someday. A family is tired, hungry, and their bladders are bursting, but “We’re Almost There.” This entertaining album will have children singing and dancing along.

Award-winning Stacey Peasley presents her 5^th children’s album, performing 10 bright, breezy, bouncy and energetic songs. Formerly a member of the girl band The Chiclettes, Peasley’s vocals soar in pop musical style, with hints of rock, jazz, and calypso motifs. Vitalijus Lisovskis joins one song with his outstanding tenor sax, while Matthew Girard performs on another with his brilliant trumpet. Peasley wants to change the world, make it a better place, and spread peace around, so she’s determined to “Make It Happen.” A child with skinned knees, stubbed toes, and bumped chin wants to tell someone about their “Boo Boo.” Running for president, playing guitar and soccer, are just some of “What Girls Do.” Chugging down the track is the “Choo Choo” heading out of town. A child goes for their swimming lesson at the “Swimming Pool,” with their favorite towel and bathing suit. In the background, listeners can hear a lifeguard, children’s voices, and splashing water. “Soapy Bubbles” are in a child’s tub, in their hair and make them laugh. This fun album will have children and parents singing along.

Top 10 Music

This year I reviewed 25 physical CD albums for this blog that had been sent to me by PR professionals and individuals. Since School Library Journal seems to no longer have any interest in reviewing music for children, others like myself have tried to take up the slack. In  the past, School Library Journal's December issue would include a list of "Top 10 Music"--albums selected by the volunteer music reviewers.  I have not listened to every album that was produced this year. But I decided to make a list of the 10 albums that I thought were among the best that I listened to and reviewed this year. Each of these 10 selections were, in my opinion, a little more creative, more musically diverse, and had that little something extra that put them over the top.
